General Information

All students are required to maintain continuous active health insurance.  Students will be automatically enrolled in and charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan if proof of other acceptable coverage is not submitted.  Once an enrollment or waiver request has been submitted no additional action is needed unless you experience a change in your status. If you have another insurance plan and would like to waive the Albany Medical College (AMC) - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan, a waiver form must be submitted. Please see Waiver Process.

Description of Student Health Insurance Program

The 2020-2021 AMC Sponsored Health Insurance Plan is a Preferred Provider Plan that has been designed specifically for AMC students and is underwritten by MVP Health Care. With an emphasis on wellness, the plan is designed to provide comprehensive coverage for medical care, including annual routine physicals and immunizations.

Dental Insurance Plan - The Guardian

The AMC sponsored dental plan is a PPO plan underwritten by The Guardian that provides for an annual benefit of $500 with your diagnostic and preventative services such as periodic oral evaluation, cleanings, and x-rays covered at 100% in-network and 90% out of network and basic services such as fillings and simple extractions covered at 50% in-network after a $25 per individual annual deductible.

Vision Discount Plan - The Guardian - Davis Vision

Included with your Albany Medical College - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan is a vision discount program. The vision discount plan is not insurance but will enable you to receive discounts on vision exams, frames, lenses, contact lenses, and more. You may locate Preferred Providers by accessing provider search online at guardiananytime.com; then click on 'Find a Provider' at the top of the screen, click on 'Find a Vision Provider,' and select Davis Vision.

Waiver Process

Maintaining health insurance coverage is mandatory for all full-time AMC students, and all students MUST be covered by a domestic health insurance plan. All students are required to enroll in the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan unless an acceptable Waiver is provided in a timely manner. The acceptable coverage to waive the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan is a parent's employer group plan, a spouse's employer group plan, a student's own employer group plan, New York Medicaid, VA/Military Benefits, or COBRA. Individually purchased plans are not acceptable for waiving enrollment.

If you have active health insurance with benefits that meet the criteria below, you may apply for a waiver of enrollment in the AMC plan. You will need to have your current insurance ID card and information regarding your plan benefits to complete the process. Once you have submitted the required information, you will receive an email verifying if your waiver meets the AMC requirements. Waivers will be accepted, May 18 - June 20 and through August 5 for incoming students. Please be aware that the health insurance charge will not be removed from your account until the waiver request is completed and approved. Students submitting waiver requests after the waiver deadline may experience a delay in adjustments to their student account.

The minimum level of coverage acceptable to waive the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan:

  • Adequate major medical coverage of at least $1,000,000 / policy year
  • Prescription coverage
  • A provider network in the Capital District area for primary care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care
  • Mental health coverage
  • Coverage for the entire academic year, including summer and holidays
  • Coverage for an annual exam

Enrollment Process

All students are required to enroll in the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan unless a waiver is submitted and approved. Enrollment and the insurance charge can be waived if proof of other health insurance is provided by submitting an online waiver.

  • Students who lose coverage midterm are required to submit an online enrollment request within 30 days of the date of loss of prior coverage for enrollment in the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan and submit proof of loss of prior coverage to HSAC at (888) 978-8355 or amc@hsac.com.

Continuation of Coverage

  • Students enrolled for coverage in the AMC - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan have the option to continue enrollment for up to 3 months after graduation.
  • The continuation of coverage will be at the same benefit level and cost as active students.
