General Information

Rocky Vista University (RVU) requires all medical students to maintain active group health insurance.  All students are automatically enrolled in and charged for the Student Health Insurance Plan each year. If you have another insurance plan and would like to waive the RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan, a waiver request must be submitted.  Please see Waiver Process below. You MUST include a copy of your Health Insurance ID card with your waiver submission.

The RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan is a Preferred Provider Plan that has been designed specifically for RVU students and is underwritten by Aetna Student Health. With an emphasis on wellness, the plan is designed to provide full coverage for medical care, including annual routine physicals and immunizations.

With an emphasis on wellness, the plan is designed to provide full coverage for medical care, including annual routine physicals and immunizations.  The RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan offers both in-network and out-of-network benefits; it is an ACA-compliant Platinum level plan. 

All students will be charged for student-only coverage in the RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan prior to the start of each academic year. The charge to the student's account will be removed if an approved waiver is granted.

Dental Insurance Plan - Aetna Dental

All students enrolled in the RVU sponsored medical plan will also be enrolled in the dental plan.

The RVU sponsored dental plan is a PPO plan underwritten by Aetna that provides for an annual benefit of $1,000 with your preventative services such as periodic oral evaluation, cleanings, and x-rays covered at 100% and basic services such as fillings and simple extractions covered at 80% when utilizing a participating provider after a $50 per individual annual deductible.

*Dental premium for students enrolled in the medical plan is included in the health rate.

Discount Benefits - Aetna Student Health

In addition to the medical and dental benefits, those enrolled in the RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan will have access to an Aetna discount program which will provide savings for vision, fitness clubs, and more at no additional cost.

Enrollment Process

All students are automatically enrolled in the RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan, and the premium charge is added to the student billing unless a waiver request is submitted and approved. Enrollment and the insurance charge can be waived if proof of other acceptable health insurance is provided by submitting an online waiver.

  • To expedite enrollment in the RVU Sponsored Student Health Plan, please follow the "Enroll" tab at the top of this page.
  • If you wish to enroll but are not in need of immediate access to care, you do not need to take any action.  You will automatically be enrolled in the RVU student health plan after the waiver period ends.
  • If you are having difficulty with the online enrollment process, please contact HSAC for assistance.
  • Students who lose coverage midterm are required to submit an enrollment request within 30 days of the date of loss of prior coverage for enrollment in the RVU - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan.  Please follow the  "Enroll" tab at the top of this page and submit your request with proof of loss of prior coverage, which can be attached to your electronic enrollment.

Waiver Process

Maintaining health insurance coverage is mandatory for all full-time RVU students, and all students MUST be covered by a domestic health insurance plan. All students are required to enroll in the RVU - Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan unless an acceptable Waiver is provided in a timely manner. All students are eligible to submit a waiver request at the beginning of each semester.  The fall submission deadline is July 31st and the spring submission deadline is December 31st. 

The acceptable coverage to waive the RVU-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan is:

  • Parent's Employer Group plan
  • Spouse's Employer Group plan
  • Student's Own Employer Group plan
  • COBRA
  • Military/Veterans Benefits
  • Medicaid (for the state in which you are attending classes or participating in clinical rotations)
  • Medicare

Individual health plans are acceptable by exception and will only be considered with a minimum of the following benefits:

  • Maximum Out of Pocket in-network of $6,600 out-of-network of $9,000
  • Deductible Maximum of $1,250 per Individual
  • Unlimited Lifetime Benefits
  • Unlimited Office Visits
  • Wellness Benefit
  • Comprehensive Prescription Plan (cannot be restricted to generic only)
  • Inpatient and outpatient Mental Health Benefits

If you have active domestic health insurance with benefits which meet the criteria above, you may apply for a waiver of enrollment in the RVU student health plan. You will need to have your current insurance ID card and information regarding your plan benefits to complete the process. Once you have submitted the required information, you will receive an email verifying if your waiver meets the RVU requirements. Waivers will be accepted through July 31, 2021, for Medical, Masters, and continuing PA Students and August 31, 2021, for PA 1 Students. Please be aware that waivers will not be accepted after the deadline, and any student who has not submitted a waiver request by the waiver deadline will be enrolled in and charged for the RVU student health plan. You MUST include a copy of your Health Insurance ID card with your waiver submission.
